Moroccan Mint Tea

Moroccan Mint Tea

Preparing traditional Moroccan tea, often referred to as "Moroccan mint tea," is a delightful process. Here’s how to make it:

Ingredients

  • Green tea (preferably Chinese gunpowder tea)
  • Fresh mint leaves (a generous handful)
  • Sugar (to taste)
  • Water (about 1 liter)

Equipment

  • Teapot (preferably a Moroccan teapot)
  • Tea glasses (small glass cups)

Instructions

  1. Boil Water: Start by boiling about 1 liter of water in a kettle.

  2. Rinse the Tea:

    • Place 1-2 tablespoons of green tea in the teapot.
    • Pour a small amount of boiling water over the tea to rinse it. Swirl it around for a few seconds, then discard the water. This helps remove bitterness.
  3. Brew the Tea:

    • Add about 3 cups of boiling water to the tea in the teapot.
    • Let it steep for about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add Mint and Sugar:

    • Add a generous handful of fresh mint leaves and sugar to taste (usually 4-6 tablespoons).
    • Allow the tea to steep for an additional 5 minutes.
  5. Mix the Tea:

    • To mix the flavors, pour the tea into a glass from a height (this aerates the tea and enhances the flavor).
    • Pour it back into the teapot and repeat a couple of times.
  6. Serve:

    • Serve the tea in small glasses, garnishing with additional mint leaves if desired.

Tips

  • Adjust the amount of mint and sugar according to your taste.
  • Traditionally, Moroccan tea is served very sweet, but you can modify it to your preference.
